| Friend, The Supreme Court stood up for election integrity this week. In a 6-3 vote, the court paused a lower court injunction that prohibited the implementation of President Trump’s recent executive order that placed restrictions on mail-in voting. Mail-in ballots were a major point of contention when Donald Trump questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election. Indeed, legitimate questions were raised about chain-of-custody and the accuracy of information on exactly who received and used mail-in ballots. That anyone fears the process implemented by this executive order is ample evidence of why it is needed. If there is no fraudulent voting happening, what harm is there in a process designed to make fraudulent voting even harder? Here’s how simple and unobtrusive the proposed mail-in process is:A state gives the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) a list of ballots they intend to mail.USPS assigns each ballot a unique bar code.When the ballot is mailed out, the barcode is scanned. If it doesn’t match the sender and address, if there is no match at all, or if it’s a duplicate, USPS will not deliver it.When the voter mails the ballot in, USPS scans the barcode again and checks to make sure it matches what was sent. Any ballots that don’t match or that prove to be duplicates won’t be delivered for counting.The process is designed to make sure the number of ballots received doesn’t exceed the number of ballots sent out and that the person USPS delivers a ballot to is the same person who sends it back. And by the way, all of the scanning and checking is done on the outside envelope. USPS never touches nor sees the actual ballot. Citizens who use mail-in ballots deserve to know they are casting secure votes and that fraudulent ballots aren’t canceling out those votes. The only people who should feel threatened by this process are those who benefit from a haphazard process that allows fraud to flourish. Under this executive order, mail-in voters can vote with confidence. Now, it’s time to rally the troops. Whether they vote through the mail or in person, let’s encourage EVERY eligible Catholic to cast a vote in November. Go forward bravely, |
