Have you ever heard of a Calliope.  It is the only musical instrument that requires a permit from the State  of Texas to be played.  The Fandangle folks in town searched unsuccessfully for five years and then decided to build their own steam-powered circus organ.  They felt that a Calliope would provide the unique music and sound that was essential to herald the beginning of the annual Fandangle Parade.  Since the unveiling of the G.P. Crutchfield’s Fandangle Calliope in 1955, the mammoth steam-powered instrument (which requires a boiler license to operate) has been a traditional ornament in the local festival.  In 1996, the Calliope was completely restored.  Today, she continues her job as “ambassador” for the summer spectacular, making special appearances in Texas parades.
