MARVEL (TIMELY COMICS) FEBRUARY 1942 STORIES

This weekend’s escapist superhero post from Balladeer’s Blog looks at Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics) stories in February 1942. I reviewed their January 1942 stories HERE.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS Vol 1 #28 (Feb 1942)

Story 1: The Poison Pill Suicides

Villain: Izan

Synopsis: The Human Torch (Golden Age) and his mutant sidekick Toro expose and shut down a ring smuggling arms out of the U.S. and selling them to the Axis Nations. The ring operates out of Coney Island amusement park, beneath which the leader Izan has a secret hideout filled with high-tech weapons and booby-traps. The title referred to Izan’s thugs whom he would kill with poison pills if they failed him. Continue reading →

A HALLOWEEN SEASON LOOK AT CALIFORNIA’S NECROPOLIS – COLMA

COLMA, CALIFORNIA – It’s called the City of the Dead, the City that Always Sleeps, etc. There are roughly one point five million people buried in the many cemeteries which make up Colma.

I sometimes think of it as an unliving Woodstock Concert audience, complete with Arlo Guthrie’s ghost exclaiming “There’s supposed to be about a million and a half dead people here tonight!” But as we’ve established, I’m kind of weird.

Colma is near San Francisco. Fresh graves in San Francisco cemeteries in the 1800s expanded those graveyards so much that around the turn of the century the city banned any additional cemetery space. The overflow began filling what is now Colma.

Eventually, Frisco decided that the existing graveyards in the city were taking up too much valuable real estate, so untold thousands of graves were moved out of San Francisco and reestablished in Colma. The city was officially labeled a necropolis in 1924 and by now the dead are said to outnumber the living in Colma by over a thousand to one. Continue reading →

THE TELETUBBIES-SOPRANOS CROSSOVER (SORT OF)

Okay, so it wasn’t an actual crossover, but Balladeer’s Blog still finds it pretty hilarious. Back in 2012, the Icelandic television station Channel Two aired an episode of the children’s show Teletubbies but accidentally attached the subtitles track from an episode of the adult-oriented, swearing and violence driven gangster series The Sopranos.

For context, The Sopranos episode in question was the 10th one from Season Four and dealt with Christopher being confronted about his drug use and his resulting negligent killing of the beloved dog. Yes, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Po and Tinky-Winky spoke in their normal way, but for anyone with Closed Captions activated the dialogue reflected an entirely different conversation.

An alert viewer in Iceland recorded a brief example of the result. He didn’t even know that the captions were from The Sopranos, just that the dialogue was wildly inappropriate for Teletubbies. Below are some screenshots with the original language subtitles plus English translations:

B-MOVIE HOSTESS ELVIRA’S MOVIE MACABRE: SEASON ONE

As Halloween Month rolls along, I will take a movie-by-movie look at the opening season of Elvira’s show Movie Macabre (1981-1986). Her massive success kicked off an even greater proliferation of Movie Hosts and Hostesses in the 1980s. I covered Elvira herself back in 2012, so this time I’m taking a look at her debut season.

GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE (1972) – Psychotronic icons Michael Pataki and William Smith starred in this twisted flick about a vampire (Pataki) who rapes a woman (Lyn Peters) who subsequently gives birth to an abnormal infant. The baby will drink only blood and grows up to be James Eastman (Smith). James goes on a quest to kill his father for the pain he brought into his mother’s life. Ultimately he does, but becomes a full vampire himself. (Just go with it.) Aired Sep 26th, 1981.

SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT (1972) – One of the pre-Halloween examples of a slasher film. A young man inherits the family mansion which years earlier was turned into an insane asylum. He starts the process of selling the place, but on Christmas Eve a former inmate of the asylum goes on a killing spree. THE John Carradine, Mary Woronov and Patrick O’Neal star along with many Andy Warhol fringies like Candy Darling. Also with Philip Bruns of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.   Aired Oct 3rd. NEWS ROUNDUP FOR OCTOBER SEVENTH

It’s a Wednesday current events roundup from Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog.

DEMOCRAT MEDIA OUTLETS LIE ABOUT TRUMP’S COMMENTS YET AGAIN – NOW THEY CLAIM HE CALLED FOR IRAN TO “TAKE OUT” LOS ANGELES AND SAN DIEGO. This type of absurd gibberish is what anti-Trump Democrats have reduced “news” coverage to, yet they get upset when called Fake News. More HERE. And HERE.

DEMOCRAT MEDIA OUTLET THE NEW YORK TIMES INSANELY BLAMES PRESIDENT TRUMP FOR THE CORNELL RAPE CASE WHICH HAPPENED IN 2024 WHEN JOE BIDEN WAS IN THE WHITE HOUSE. Yes, the crime happened back then, but anti-Trump zealots are still ignorant, uninformed, and emotionally unstable enough to believe anything they’re told.

PRESIDENT TRUMP TAKES FURTHER ACTION TO CUT DIESEL FUEL COSTS. Which still aren’t even as high as they got under Biden.

SUPREME COURT AGAIN SMACKS DOWN AND OVERRULES AN OVERREACHING DISTRICT JUDGE WHO TRIED BLOCKING TRUMP FROM TAKING PERFECTLY CONSTITUTIONAL ACTION AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

VIRGINIA’S DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR CAUGHT RESTORING VOTING RIGHTS TO DEAD FELONS. I will say again, it stopped being a case of both political parties being just as bad a long time ago. The Democrats have become far, far worse.

SENIOR CIA CRIMINAL PLEADS GUILTY AND ADMITS TO STEALING AT LEAST ONE HUNDRED NINETY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS IN TAXPAYER MONEY. The fact that Trump and his DOJ are the first I’ve seen willing to arrest and prosecute such people is a further example of why CIA gentry hate Trump and constantly work against him. THE ROOM IN THE TOWER (1912) – A HALLOWEEN STORY

THE ROOM IN THE TOWER (1912) – This story was written by E.F. Benson. The British narrator has a recurring nightmare in which he visits his friend John Clinton at his family manor. The other family members, including his mother Mrs. Stone, are cold and grim toward him.

Mrs. Stone assigns the unnamed narrator to a room in the tower and has John lead the way. When the dreamer enters the room, he sees something horrific but always awakens before whatever it is fully registers in his mind.

This goes on for years, with Clinton family members aging in the dream. At one point Mrs. Stone dies, yet in the illogic of the narrator’s dream she is still in the manor when he visits, and she still has John lead him to the room in the tower. The ending of the dream is the same. Continue reading →

STRANGE HARVEST (2025) HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

STRANGE HARVEST (2025) – Halloween Month continues with this review of a movie which got previewed in 2024 before its official release in August 2025. Because Balladeer’s Blog covers everything from mild Silent-Era horror films to extreme horror from recent decades I will post my courtesy warning for Strange Harvest:

IF YOU DO NOT LIKE EXTREME CONCEPTS AND VIOLENCE, PLEASE DON’T CLICK ON “CONTINUE READING” BELOW. Thanks.

Strange Harvest nicely reproduces the vibes of the countless True Crime channels and combines it with the feel of more horror-oriented channels like Scary Interesting. The film is presented as a True Crime episode about a viciously violent serial killer who has been at large for over twenty years.

However, his murders seemed unrelated until detective work recently found the obscure link connecting them. I will go into details about the grotesque murders below. Oddly, despite the grisly nature of the slayings, Strange Harvest otherwise starts out with a slow burn approach reminiscent of Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and other films.

The movie patiently adds the supernatural aspects slowly, and even then indicates the paranormal trappings may just reflect the killer’s insane beliefs until the obvious can no longer be ignored. Continue reading →

THE DALTON CHANGELING

Balladeer’s Blog presents another neglected American horror legend in honor of Halloween Month.

THE DALTON CHANGELING

Anne Coleman was a feared witch in Lanesboro, MA in the 1780s. She was suspected of causing storms that sank ships, bringing on diseases that killed cattle, making food go bad and other malevolent deeds.

Eunice Dalton – a new mother – had told her husband Ezra and anyone else who would listen that she was certain that Anne Coleman had stolen their baby boy out of the crib and replaced it with a changeling. Ezra and others tried to assure her that the baby was her own but she continued regarding it with fear. Continue reading →

SPIDER-MAN, KINGPIN AND THE ANCIENT STONE TABLET

This weekend’s escapist superhero post looks at one of the most memorable Spider-Man stories from the 60s involving the Kingpin, the Shocker, the Lizard and Marvel’s Mafia pastiche the Maggia.

SPIDER-MAN Vol 1 #68 (Jan 1969)

Title: Crisis on the Campus

Villain: The Kingpin

Synopsis: The Kingpin, at this point in time still strictly a Spider-Man villain, gathers his criminal underlings in a plan to steal a priceless, ancient stone Tablet that is currently on display at Empire State University, where Peter Parker is a student.

That same day, Peter, his girlfriend Gwen Stacy, Harry Osborn, his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, Flash Thompson and other students get caught up in outrage over ESU’s decision to eliminate some student housing to accommodate the number of experts around the world who are coming to ESU to try translating the mysterious Tablet.

That evening the students mount a protest about the way some of them are being thrown out of their housing to make room for the arriving archeologists. The Kingpin and his thugs take advantage of the protest as it rages out of control to break in and steal the priceless tablet.

Peter Parker sees this and slips away to become Spider-Man. He battles the Kingpin and his men but the villain gets away with the tablet. Our hero is determined to find him and retrieve the mysterious ancient relic. Continue reading →

PETER RUGG – A GHOST STORY FROM 1824

PETER RUGG, THE MISSING MAN (1824) – This short story was written by author William Austin. A ghostly post-chaise horsedrawn carriage is often sighted and/or encountered up and down the East Coast. The carriage is pursued by a supernatural storm and is driven by a man named Peter Rugg with his daughter Jenny as his passenger.

In the story, the narrator character Jonathan Dunwell and his driver meet Peter Rugg and his daughter on the road one night. Rugg asks for directions to Boston, obtains them from Dunwell’s driver and drives off, pursued by the storm.

Dunwell is puzzled, so his driver explains that Peter, his daughter, and their black horse are ghosts. Long ago they were killed in a storm while making their way to Boston. Rugg had refused to seek shelter at an inn, screaming to the heavens that he would reach Boston that night or never, and he and his child were then killed by the storm. Continue reading →

THE WEIRD, WEIRD WEST – HORROR FILMS WITH A WESTERN THEME

With Halloween approaching Balladeer’s Blog is doing its usual holiday-themed posts. This time around I’ll give a brief synopsis of western-flavored horror flicks. In keeping with my blog’s theme of covering out of the way topics I won’t be examining movies that are too well known, like Billy the Kid vs Dracula, Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter or The Terror of Tiny Town. Ditto for more recent movies like Sundown and Billy The Kid in Hell. As for West World and Welcome to Blood City, those are more science fiction than horror, so they aren’t included either.

black noon

BLACK NOON (1971) – Roy Thinnes stars as an old west preacher who falls in with a coven of witches in the town of Melas (Salem spelled backwards of course).

The witches tempt Thinnes into thinking he’s a prophet and healer, then use his vanity against him and his wife during their dark ritual of the Black Noon, which takes place during a mid-day eclipse.

CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN (1974) –  A medical student and his hippy friends try to renovate a dude ranch haunted by the Headless Horseman. No, it’s not the figure from the Washington Irving tale, but an old-west gunslinger who was unjustly hanged, losing his head in the process. The Horseman now roams the dude ranch by night looking for victims to frighten. SPOILER: The Continue reading →

HALLOWEEN MONTH 2026 IS HERE!

October 1st kicks off Balladeer’s Blog’s usual mixing of horror items in with my usual topics. I review horror films from the silent movie era onward as well as obscure stories from the 1800s and earlier, like they’re Halloween counterparts to my Ancient Science Fiction reviews.

To give new readers a taste of how Halloween is done around here, take a look at some of last year’s Halloween Month highlights:

GRAND FINALE

HALLOWEEN WITH PAUL NASCHY – I capped off the horror season with a look at the 60s, 70s and 80s movies of Spain’s King of Horror – Jacinto Molina aka Paul Naschy. And I mean all of them, not just his many, many werewolf movies about tormented lycanthrope Waldemar Daninsky. Naschy also starred as a mummy, as Dracula, as slashers, as an exorcist and so on.

There was Assignment: Terror, one of my all-time favorite Bad Movies featuring aliens who possess the dead bodies of scientists so they can conquer Earth with a vampire, a mummy and a werewolf. Werewolf vs the Yeti was another as was Dr. Jekyll vs the Wolfman.

Non-werewolf Naschy films I reviewed included Count Dracula’s Great Love, Horror Rises from the Tomb, The Hunchback of the Rue Morgue (yes), Vengeance of the Zombies, Return of the Witch, The Mummy’s Revenge, House of Psychotic Women, Exorcism, and The Man with the Severed Head.

FORGOTTEN HORROR STORIES

MAN-SIZE IN MARBLE (1887), about old stone statues of two knights which come to life to do evil. Classics like The King in Yellow (1895), Isabella of Egypt (1812) and several Ambrose Bierce short stories. Continue reading →
