Trump is seeking a jury trial and no less than $15 billion in compensatory damages as well as an unspecified amount in punitive damages to be decided during a trial. The complaint also says he wants the Times to retract “the defamatory publications and statements.”
The case remains active. The Times and other defendants filed motions in December 2025 seeking dismissal, or alternatively transfer, and asked for oral argument.
Trump filed opposition briefs in April. Public docket materials reviewed by Newsweek do not show that Judge Steven D. Merryday has ruled on the motions or scheduled oral argument in the case as of June 22.
