Deterrants Used by Police on January 6, 2021
On January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement used a mix of less‑lethal chemical and physical deterrents to confront rioters who breached the Capitol grounds.
Primary chemical deterrents:
- Pepper spray (OC spray): Officers deployed pepper ball launchers and handheld canisters to incapacitate rioters. Testimony described officers spraying rioters in the face, including a combat veteran who was hit multiple times ProPublica+1.
- Bear spray: Used in large quantities, often in combination with pepper spray, to create acrid smoke and chemical irritation. Officers reported being sprayed multiple times, sometimes while wearing masks ProPublica+1.
- WD‑40 or brake cleaner: Rioters themselves sprayed police with these substances, and some officers retaliated with them Business Insider.
Physical and mechanical deterrents:
- Pepper ball launchers: Used to fire chemical‑filled rounds at rioters, sometimes causing visible injury to the face ProPublica+1.
- Baton and baton‑like weapons: Officers resorted to batons when pepper balls were ineffective or when rioters were too close Business Insider.
- Flash bang grenades: Limited to certain munitions; tear gas canisters (37mm, 40mm, Stinger Ball) were prohibited for Capitol Police during the riot due to leadership restrictions wusa9.com.
Key restrictions and limitations:
- Capitol Police leadership had not authorized tear gas for use on January 6, despite its use in other federal protests earlier that year wusa9.com.
- Officers quickly ran out of the small stockpile of allowed munitions, relying on unarmed civilian employees to deliver additional less‑lethal gear wusa9.com.
Summary:
The main deterrants were pepper spray, bear spray, and pepper ball launchers, supplemented by bats and flash bangs. Tear gas was not used due to prior restrictions, and rioters themselves used WD‑40 and brake cleaner against police. These measures were often overwhelmed by the scale and ferocity of the assault, leading to multiple officer injuries and fatalities ProPublica+2.

Reporter disputes Mike Johnson’s claim on Jan. 6 rioters
Fact-check challenge: Journalist Brian J. Karem rebuked Johnson’s portrayal of Jan. 6 rioters as peaceful, calling it false based on firsthand experience.
Ongoing minimization: Johnson has repeatedly downplayed the violence, aligning with efforts to recast the attack as less severe.
Political implications: The dispute underscores persistent partisan divides over the Capitol attack and its place in U.S. political memory.

In my opinion, Pelosi was responsible for the attack due to her lack of responsibility and the fact she had her daughter producer staged to photograph the melee and she enjoyed the whole debacle..
