KOMMONSENTSJANE – Where Are the Social Graces of the Left Comediennes ?

04/29/2026

My Mother always prompted us when leaving home for any gathering: MIND YOUR MANNERS.

It seems that social graces seem to be missing in the Democrats’ social sphere. Instead of humor they stoop to humiliation. Their humor is very boring and lack luster and ends up being hateful.

Resurfaced Carson clip fuels debate over Kimmel joke

Why now?: Carson’s 1981 clip resurfaced amid backlash over Kimmel’s joke about Melania Trump, made shortly before an assassination attempt on President Trump.

What’s the contrast?: Carson’s respectful tone after the Reagan shooting is being compared to Kimmel’s sharper satire, highlighting shifts in late-night political humor.

Why it matters: The episode raises questions about comedy’s role in political discourse, its influence on public perception, and the boundaries of satire during sensitive moments.

Carson’s 1981 grace revisited

A clip has resurfaced showing Johnny Carson’s televised reaction following the March 30, 1981, assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton. That attack left Reagan and three others wounded, including White House press secretary James Brady, and occurred after Reagan addressed union members in the hotel’s ballroom. Carson’s response is now being contrasted with present-day late-night commentary, with viewers noting differences in tone when addressing politically charged violence. Time + 2

Kimmel joke triggers political backlash

Jimmy Kimmel faced intense criticism from Donald and Melania Trump after joking that the First Lady had the glow of an “expectant widow” during a parody Correspondents’ Dinner segment. The remark, made two days before shots were fired at the actual dinner, led to calls from the Trumps for ABC to fire Kimmel, framing the joke as a call to violence. The controversy reflects heightened sensitivity to political humor in an era of recurrent threats against public figures.

Echoes of past presidential attacks

The recent shooting attempt at the Washington Hilton, venue of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, drew immediate historical parallels to the 1981 Reagan attack outside the same hotel. In that earlier incident, John Hinckley Jr. fired six shots at close range, wounding Reagan and three others before being subdued. The shared location and timing have intensified scrutiny of both events and the cultural responses that followed. Time + 3

Shifting norms in political comedy

The Carson-Kimmel comparison underscores a broader cultural shift in late-night political commentary—from Carson’s restrained broadcast style to Kimmel’s more confrontational satire. While roasts and edgy humor have long been staples of political events, today’s hyper-partisan climate magnifies their perceived stakes and consequences. This evolution raises questions about whether such commentary strengthens democratic discourse through free expression or erodes it by deepening divisions. Salon + 2
