KOMMONSENTSJANE – MY FRIEND RUTH’S BLOG – CALLED BLT.

BLT is one of my favorite sandwiches; but, I always toast either two or three slices (club sandwich) of the bread and use a bread knife and slice each bread slice and insert cheese in all three pieces of bread and toast it again to melt the cheese – so good and more nourishment and then finish it off with the other ingredients. My husband uses a fried egg in his.

Ruth teased me one time about “cooking from scratch” after we had dinner at our ranch with Ruth/Ken. She revealed her good secret which is – she “pushes” food around in her kitchen and something I now use when I am in a hurry.

Pushing food around means – purchasing cooked food which is ready to put on the table or frozen food which is ready to put in the oven or microwave.

Thanks to my friend, Ruth, I will include it in my next published cook book. Our first book was, The Robjoy Ranch Cook Book.

What is the origin of the BLT sandwich?

In the case of the Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich (BLT), culinary evidence confirms this recipe descended from late Victorian-era tea sandwiches. The earliest recipes for BLTs were listed under different names in cookbooks. Most of the ingredients of the BLT (bread, bacon, lettuce) were known to the Ancient Romans.

Subsequently, one may also ask, when was the BLT sandwich invented?

Looking back, one of the earliest mentions of the sandwich was in the 1903 Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book, where a club sandwich included bacon, lettuce, tomato, along with mayo and a slice of turkey. However it was unclear when people started abbreviating the bacon, lettuce and tomato to BLT.

Subsequently, question is, what was the first sandwich? 1st Century B.C. – The first recorded sandwich was by the famous rabbi, Hillel the Elder, who lived during the 1st century B.C. He started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs.

In this manner, why are BLTS so good?

The bacon brings people in, so it has to be good: smoky; thick enough to chew instead of crumble but still crispy; and baked so that the pieces lay flat. The Lettuce: Chopped romaine. If lettuce is there for crunch, it better crunch. Too often the tomato juices and mayo wilt it before it can ever deliver.

Claes Oldenburg

In 1963, pop art sculptor Claes Oldenburg created Giant BLT, a soft sculpture representing the sandwich, now in the collection of the Whitney Museum

of American Art. It measures 32 by 39 inches (81 cm × 99 cm) and uses vinyl, kapok and wood, painted in acrylic. Every time it is moved, it must be restacked, which means it varies between exhibits.

RAMBLING WITH RUTH

October 28, 2021. Madison, Mississippi. BLT.
Does anyone know who made the first BLT? I certainly do not know. But whoever it was, it was a genius idea. Christina shops for me before I arrive home after a long stay away. She buys bread and milk, cheese and fruit and anything that catches her fancy. This time she bought 2 packages of cooked bacon. She always buys tomatoes and lettuce. All I need to do is heat up half of the package and eat it. Perfect for me who does not cook. I have been home here in Mississippi for four weeks and during that time, I have eated four bacon, lettuce and tomatoe sandwiches. They were delicious. Today at noon I ate my main meal but when it got to be 8:00, I decided I needed to eat something. The house was chilly so I needed to warm up so ater poking around in the fridge, I decided on a BLT. I toasted the bread just a bit. Next I heated the bacon and sliced the tomatoe. Then I put them all together, using mayonaise on the toast. I use lots of lettuce so my sandwich is thick. Finally I watch TV while eating my delicious meal. Tonight I watched football. There is nothing better than enjoying a BLT for supper. Gold star to Christina for providing all the ingredients. Actually, Kashina shopped for me to get more tomatoes and lettuce when I ran out. I certainly enjoyed those four sandwiches.
