There’s snow on the ground on Capitol Hill for the first time this winter. Here is your weekly insight: Heritage President Jim DeMint spoke with President Donald Trump about why the House Republican health care bill misses the mark. We’ve got the details. Also, the White House will release its “skinny budget” this week, outlining its fiscal priorities for the first time.

And we are less than a week away from the first hearing for Judge Neil Gorsuch as he begins his confirmation process. Heritage breaks down exactly how that process works and why his confirmation should be a swift one. Take notes, we have your conservative policy solutions right here.

Republicans promised to repeal Obamacare, not fix it.
Last week, House Republicans released their new health care bill. Unfortunately, as the bill is currently drafted, it misses the mark. “The key problem with the draft House health care bill is that it fails to correct the features of Obamacare that drove up health insurance costs.

Instead, it mainly tweaks Obamacare’s financing and subsidy structure,” writes Ed Haislmaier, a senior research fellow in health care policy at Heritage. Republicans have promised time and again to repeal Obamacare—not fix it, not try to make it better. Conservatives should demand better from the GOP’s repeal effort, and use their 2015 repeal bill as a baseline.

Heritage President Jim DeMint met with Trump in the Oval Office to discuss the health care bill. Watch his interview on CBN’s “The Brody File” discussing that meeting and check out this important compilation of our research, commentaries, and videos on repealing and replacing Obamacare.
Congress is addicted to spending money it doesn’t have.
On Thursday, the Office of Management and Budget is expected to release a “skinny budget” outlining Trump’s spending priorities. Romina Boccia, Heritage’s Grover M. Hermann research fellow in federal budgetary affairs, recently wrote in The National Interest that what’s needed is a new era of fiscal responsibility and spending control.

“Any tax relief Congress and the president can deliver this year will be short-lived in the absence of consequent spending controls that bring spending and revenues into closer alignment,” writes Boccia.

Congress is addicted to spending money it does not have. Congress needs to listen to the American people and cut spending and support a budget that balances within 10 years without increasing taxes.
POLICY PICTURE

Excessive government spending, especially on autopilot (mandatory) programs, will continue to increase budget deficits if left unchecked. By 2046, the federal budget deficit is projected to be 8.8 percent of gross domestic product. Lawmakers must cut spending and pursue structural budget reforms to control these deficits. BUDGET

We have to stop spending – Congress does not know how to spend or save money.  We have to elect a new leader to replace Paul Ryan – too much corruption.

Getting rid of the illegals would go a long way to solving this problem.
