Reflecting back on your early years, it is interesting to take a look at the people who were involved in your life. You didn’t realize at the time – these people were the ones who actually pushed you up that ladder of success. Just think about your own life and who touched you? I know in mine there were a lot of people.
From the beginning – my family . My mother was the largest influence – then my brothers and sisters – watching them grow up and the experiences (positive and negative) they had which taught me not to go down that road. Next was Mrs. Carroll who encouraged me to take piano lessons in exchange for cleaning her house and washing dishes. Then working with my brother, John, and helping him with his paper route and the people who we met and their specific directions on where they wanted their paper and actually following their directions.
After that was Harold Scarborough at his pharmacy where I worked part-time and attended high school; and, Winnie Brown, the principal at Lee High School, where I worked in her office during my off period. After graduation from high school, Mr. Scarborough out of the clear blue sky said – Exxon had called him to set up an interview. Fate works in strange ways. After that, it was an experience I never dreamed.
Working for Exxon was like working for a family. In fact, I liked it so well, I stayed for 42 years. The people who manage this company are phenomenal. I can never thank all of those people enough who I worked with throughout those years. A day never passed that my husband and I said going to work was like going to a party because of the relationships with others and getting a job done. It wasn’t easy; but, the cooperation and loyalty was unbelievable.
So when you reflect on who supported you – just give a shout-out to those who gave you that boost.
