A new march today which will be led by Al Sharpton in conjunction with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) President Michael Mulgrew. Mulgrew said the UFT was joining the march because the union has a long history of activism. These marchers are set to protest the death of an unarmed black man (Eric Garner, who allegedly was selling loose cigarettes on the streets of New York) who was placed in a chokehold which is an illegal tactic by a white New York Police officer. The protestors are expected to draw around 3 to 5,000 which is in contrast to the Ferguson, MO, protests.
The intention of this march is to allow its citizenry to question those in authority, but respect them at the same time. This is all well and good to protest; but, the problem is two-fold. One is why is the teachers association getting involved? What do they have to do with Sharpton, the death of this person, and the police department? The teachers association should be in the throes of being sure all schools are ready for the children to return to school. This is certainly not the fellow to lead the union in the 21st century. He should have been left him behind in the 20th century. The word activism should not be a part of any agenda when you are talking about education or children. If it is, this tells the public they are using the children as shields. They should stop the social promotion and get back to teaching our children period.
The second is why isn’t Sharpton delving into the real problem which is black males who make up about 7% of the U.S. population but commit 53% of all murders in the U.S. In the U.S. about 8,000 African-Americans are killed each year and 93% of them killed by African-Americans. That is 7,400 blacks killed by other blacks. Where are the words of condemnation and sorrow from Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Sharpton, and Jackson on these statistics – the facts that members of their own race are executing each other?
The statics show that in New York City alone Blacks and Hispanics commit 96% of all crimes in the city. After the march today, maybe Sharpton, Lee, and Jackson can form a committee and work on solving this BIG problem in the U.S.
