California Governor Gavin Newsom edged out President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance in a new hypothetical poll of the 2028 presidential race.

Kiersten Pels, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee (RNC), responded to the poll in a statement to Newsweek. Here's What You Should Pay for a New Metal Roof in 2025!

“Gavin Newsom’s extreme, failed agenda has turned California into a haven for violent crime and high taxes, causing citizens to flee the state in droves. If Democrats think exporting California’s chaos to the rest of the country is their path forward, they’re even more out of touch than we thought,” Pels said.

Newsweek also reached out to Newsom’s office for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Newsom has emerged as a favorite of many Democrats to become the party’s 2028 presidential nominee in recent polls. He has not formally announced a run but has taken actions like traveling to the early-voting primary state South Carolina that have fueled speculation he could be gearing up for a potential run. He has cast himself as a leading foil to Trump, taking on high-profile battles over redistricting and the president’s efforts to send federal troops into Los Angeles to quell protests over his immigration policies.

Trump is ineligible to run for president again come next election, as the U.S. Constitution prohibits presidents from serving more than two terms. Still, some Republicans have pushed the idea that he could seek another term—though it would be legally dubious—and he has been included in some potential polls of the 2028 election.

Trump floated the idea of running for a third term, sometimes seemingly in jest, but told Time magazine in April 2024 he “wouldn’t be in favor” of repealing the 22nd Amendment, which states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.”

What To Know

The new poll from Leger found Newsom leading Trump and Vance, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has also been floated as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.

In a match-up against Trump, Newsom led by four points (48 to 44 percent). He led Vance by a smaller single-point margin (47 to 46 percent) and Rubio by five points (49 to 44 percent).

Democrats would also lead the generic ballot by about two points (48 to 46 percent) among decided voters in the 2028 presidential election, the poll found.

Andrew Enns, an executive vice president at Leger, told Newsweek on Friday morning that the poll suggests Newsom has “managed to get some good name recognition and connect in a positive manner” with Democrats and independent voters.

“It will be interesting to see with these numbers if we see Newsom being a bit more proactive in the midterm elections outside of California,” he said. “These numbers give a little bit of a sense that it would be interesting if he did engage in that midterm election and what impact he might have on the eventual result.”

He noted that voters may view Vance as a bit less “outspoken” than Trump, which could be one reason why his support is a bit stronger than the incumbent president. His presence with Trump in the media also helps him with Republican voters, Enns added.

In the hypothetical GOP primary, assuming Trump does not run, Vance would have the advantage among Republicans, 50 percent of whom said they would support him. Nine percent would back Rubio, while 8 percent said they would vote for Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris led the hypothetical Democratic primary with 30 percent support, while Newsom followed with 24 percent. Ten percent said they would vote for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, and 8 percent backed former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The poll surveyed 1,014 adults from August 29 to August 31 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Presidential Race 2028: What Other Polls Say About Gavin Newsom

A recent YouGov/Yahoo poll similarly showed Newsom up against Trump and Vance—he led both Republicans by eight points (49 to 41 percent). It surveyed 1,690 adults from August 29 to September 2 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Meanwhile, an Emerson College poll showed Vance with a narrow lead over Newsom—44.4 percent to 43.5 percent. It surveyed 1,000 registered voters from August 25 to August 26 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

What People Are Saying

California Governor Gavin Newsom told The Wall Street Journal in June: “I’m not thinking about running, but it’s a path that I could see unfold.”

President Donald Trump told reporters in June: “He’s done a terrible job. I like Gavin Newsom. He’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent, everybody knows.”

CNN’s Harry Enten wrote on X on August 22: “Big signal for Newsom: A rising tide of support from the voters who know him best. 75 percent of CA Dems are excited for him to run for prez vs. just 35 percent who wanted him to run in 2023. He beats Harris! Every nominee has won their home state in the primary & led early polls in them.”

What Happens Next?

Candidates typically make campaign announcements after the midterms, which are scheduled to take place in November 2026. Newsom’s second term as governor ends at the start of 2027, as he is not eligible to run for reelection due to term limits.

Why a Bad Jobs Report Is Good News

A lot of things are happening in the market today.

Let’s talk first about the jobs report, which came in weaker than expected. This morning’s report showed only 22,000 jobs were added in August, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%. That’s down from the 73,000 jobs created in July.

Economists were looking for 75,000 jobs in August. There were also some revisions to previous months. For example, June’s numbers now show a loss of 14,000 jobs during the month, down from a previous downward revision in early August showing 14,000 jobs added in June. That’s the first monthly jobs loss in four years. In total, the revisions show a total of just about 30,000 jobs added over the past three months.

However, in this environment, bad news is good.

Many economists say Friday’s disappointing jobs report is sending warning signals about the pace of hiring across the U.S. and the broader health of the economy.

Employers added only 22,000 nonfarm jobs in August, far short of Wall Street analyst forecasts of 80,000, while the nation’s unemployment rate rose to 4.3% — the highest level since October of 2021, when the economy was still reeling from the effects of the pandemic. In 2024, the economy added an average of 168,000 per month, labor data shows.

The job market is faltering partly because of the Trump administration’s tariffs, which are heightening economic uncertainty, boosting costs for importers and complicating business planning.. Some economists also think that rapid employer adoption of artificial intelligence is hurting demand for recent college graduates and other entry-level workers, although there is ongoing debate among researchers about how much AI is affecting job growth.

“Uncertainty makes it very, very difficult for people in companies to make decisions,” Laura Ullrich, director of economic research for North America at job-search firm Indeed and a former official at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, told CBS MoneyWatch. “My former boss says that when you are driving through fog, you slow down — but if it gets thick enough, you pull over.”

The Trump administration defended its trade and other economic policies, expressing confidence they will eventually drive growth.Another Market Crash Is Coming—Here’s When

“President Trump’s trade deals have unlocked unprecedented market access for American exports to economies that in total are worth over $32 trillion with 1.2 billion people,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch. “As these unprecedented trade deals and the administration’s pro-growth domestic agenda of deregulation and historic working-class tax cuts take effect, American businesses and families alike have the certainty that the best is yet to come.”

In response to the jobs report, President Trump on Friday posted on social media that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell should have moved sooner to cut interest rates. Lower borrowing costs can stimulate job growth by driving consumer spending and making it cheaper for businesses to expand their operations.

“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell should have lowered rates long ago. As usual, he’s ‘Too Late!’,” the president wrote.

Why is that – because with the NEW AI – companies are regrouping and lowering their employee head count.

U.S. job growth continued to slow down in August, with just 22,000 new jobs—a sign that the labor market is deteriorating markedly.

Friday’s report adds to a summer of slow hiring and points to a stagnant job market that has lengthened job searches, shut young people out of employment and increased unemployment for Black workersNew Study Ranks the Top 10 Wealth Management Firms of 2025

The Labor Department’s report also highlighted weakness from earlier in the year. The government revised its numbers from previous months and said that the economy lost a net 13,000 jobs in June. It was the first such decline since December 2020.

The losses in August were widespread, with the report showing drops in employment across sectors including manufacturing and finance. Unemployment rose to 4.3% from 4.2%. That is still relatively low, suggesting that immigration restrictions are crimping the supply of available workers.

The report was also the first since President Trump a month ago fired the head of the agency that puts together the jobs data, after the July release painted a surprisingly gloomy picture of the economy.

Friday’s report all but seals the case that the hot jobs market of the postpandemic years is over. That makes a Federal Reserve rate cut this month practically guaranteed.Related video: First jobs report since Trump fired agency head shows hiring slowdown (Scripps News)

First jobs report since Trump fired agency head shows hiring slowdown

Uncertainty over Trump’s tariffs and other policies has led many companies to cut back on adding workers—a change that has been particularly challenging for people just entering the labor force, such as new graduates from high school and college.

Consumers, who are still feeling pinched from the recent run of inflation, are likewise worried that the new tariffs are starting to trickle through the economy.

“The labor market is continuing to slow to stall speed,” said Rebecca Patterson, an economist and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. “The economic outlook is incredibly uncertain. Companies are being very cautious about adding personnel.”

The August jobs numbers were well below the gain of 75,000 jobs that economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected to see. The unemployment rate, which is based on a separate survey from the jobs figures, was 4.3%, up slightly from 4.2% in July.Unemployment rate

The U.S. has added just 598,000 jobs so far in 2025. Outside of 2020, when the pandemic hit, that is the fewest for the first eight months of the year since 2009, when the economy was buckled by the financial crisis. The weakness has been particularly pronounced since May—the month after Trump announced his sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs—with an average gain of about 26,750 jobs a monthWhat Is a Family Trust?

Private-sector employment grew by 38,000 jobs in August. That was driven by a gain of 46,800 jobs in healthcare and social assistance, a category that tends to add jobs regardless of how the overall economy is faring. Among the sectors registering sharp employment declines, manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs, construction lost 7,000 and professional and business services lost 17,000.

“If America wasn’t getting older and sicker, we would have a negative payroll print today. That’s not a good thing,” Patterson said.

Federal government employment declined by 15,000 jobs. However, those losses don’t reflect the magnitude of the massive job cuts the Trump administration has announced. Many federal workers have been on paid leave or are still getting severance pay, and therefore still counted as employed. JPMorgan Chase economists said that about 150,000 employees who took deferred resignations, and are still counted as having jobs, are set to roll off of government payrolls starting in October.

Traders in interest-rate derivatives now see a September rate cut as all but locked in. Still, stocks were in the red, a sign that investors don’t think a September cut is a cure-all for the economy.

Trump criticized Fed Chair Jerome Powell in a social-media post after the report came out. “Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell should have lowered rates long ago. As usual, he’s ‘Too Late!’” he wrote.

Fed officials are increasingly concerned about weakness in the labor market. Powell had previously signaled the central bank was on track to cut rates if data suggested that the labor market was slowing.Federal-government employment, change from a month earlier

Federal-government employment, change from a month earlier

Powell said last month that, while labor markets appear to be stable, it is “a curious kind of balance,” where both the supply of and demand for workers is slowing.

Companies are pulling back on hiring to keep profits healthy at a time of tepid demand. Meanwhile, immigration restrictions are crimping the availability of workers, lowering the number of jobs the economy needs to add each month to keep the unemployment rate from rising.

Pantheon Macroeconomics economist Samuel Tombs noted that the unemployment rate has risen slightly less than 0.2 percentage points over the past six months, despite weakening job growth, which “probably partly reflects weaker growth in the workforce due to tighter migration policies.”

“The slowdown in immigration means that we don’t need as many jobs to keep the labor market in balance as we did a year or two ago,” said Jed Kolko, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Some groups are faring worse than others in the tepid job market. The share of unemployed people who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or longer rose to 25.7%—the highest since February 2022. That is a reflection of how it has gotten harder, in a low hiring environment, for those without work to find jobs.

The unemployment rate for Black workers rose to 7.5% from 7.2%, its highest level since October 2021.Consumers are worried about the new tariffs that are starting to trickle through the economy.

July’s figures were revised up by 6,000 to a gain of 79,000 for the month. June’s figures were revised from a gain of 14,000 to the 13,000 loss.

The Aug. 1 jobs report included huge negative revisions to the May and June numbers. Revisions happen because many of the businesses and government agencies that the Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys each month don’t report data in time for that month’s jobs report.

Trump fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after that month-ago report. At the time, Trump claimed in a social-media post that the government’s jobs numbers had been rigged to make him look bad. Trump nominated Erwin John “E.J.” Antoni, a longtime critic of the agency, as McEntarfer’s replacement. He will have to be confirmed by the Senate.

In an August interview with Fox News Digital, Antoni floated the idea of suspending the monthly jobs reports and publishing quarterly data instead. A White House official said that Antoni made the comment before he was nominated for the position and it isn’t his official stance as the nominee.

At a dinner with tech leaders on Thursday night, Trump said the “real” jobs numbers would come in a year when new technology sites open. “You’re gonna see job numbers like our country has never seen before,” Trump said.

KOMMONSENTSJANE – President Trump Used Two Words About Chicago.

09/07/2025

Would the Governor of Chicago, Illinois, explain to the people why he doesn’t want to work with the President since the state itself hasn’t been able to make a difference. Just think, Mr. Governor, the difference this would make in your city and how many lives this would save. Just play like the President was a Democrat during that time (speaking for myself), make it happen, you can take the credit, and what a difference this would make. No one will hold it against you.

A blast from the past. Just think how many years we have reported on these shootings in Chicago:

Trump Used Two Words About Chicago Crime That Left Democrats Scrambling

Posted on

Jaromir Chalabala via Shutterstock

Chicago just had another blood-soaked weekend that should shame every politician in Illinois.

But instead of begging for help, Democrat leaders are doubling down on their disastrous approach to crime.

And Trump used two words about Chicago crime that left Democrats scrambling to defend the indefensible.

Trump calls out the “incompetent” leadership destroying Chicago

President Trump didn’t mince words when he saw the carnage from Chicago’s latest weekend of violence.

Six people dead and 27 wounded in what officials laughably call “crime sprees” across the city.

Trump fired off a Truth Social post that cut straight to the heart of the problem plaguing the Windy City.

“A really DEADLY weekend in Chicago. 6 DEAD, 27 HURT IN CRIME SPREES ALLOVER THE CITY. Panic stricken Governor Pritzker says that crime is under control, when in fact it is just the opposite. He is an incompetent Governor who should call me for HELP. Mayor Johnson is no better. Make Chicago Great Again!” Trump wrote late Tuesday night.¹

The two words that have Democrats in Illinois losing their minds? “Incompetent Governor.”

Trump hit the nail on the head about J.B. Pritzker, who’s been running Illinois into the ground while pretending everything’s fine.

But here’s what really has these politicians panicked – Trump offered to help fix their mess.

Instead of jumping at the chance to save lives, Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson are more worried about their political reputations than dead bodies piling up in their streets.

Pritzker actually had the nerve to call Trump’s offer of federal assistance “exactly the type of overreach that our country’s founders warned against.”²

Really? The founders were worried about stopping murder sprees?

The numbers tell the real story about Chicago’s crime disaster

Let’s talk about what “under control” actually looks like in Pritzker’s Chicago.3

The Chicago police department’s own numbers paint a horrific picture: nine people murdered in seven days, along with 27 sexual assaults, 128 robberies, 114 aggravated batteries, 117 burglaries, 297 stolen cars, and nearly 1,000 theft cases.³

Those aren’t statistics – they’re families destroyed, businesses shuttered, and neighborhoods turned into war zones.

For 13 years running, Chicago has earned the grim title of America’s murder capital, racking up 573 killings in 2024 alone.⁴

Chicago’s illegal gun problem is so bad that cops there seize more firearms than their counterparts in Los Angeles and New York City put together.⁵https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?

But sure, everything’s “under control.”

Johnson tried to push back with his own fact sheet, claiming a 33% reduction in homicides and 38% reduction in shootings.⁶

Even if those numbers are accurate – and with Democrat politicians, that’s a big if – they’re starting from such a catastrophically high baseline that Chicago is still a killing field.

Meanwhile, Johnson and Pritzker have been throwing tantrums about Trump’s suggestion to deploy National Guard troops to clean up their mess.

“Chicagoans are not asking for a militarized force to occupy our city,” Johnson whined during a news conference.⁷

No, they’re just asking not to get shot walking to the corner store in broad daylight.

Look at what’s really happening here

Here’s the thing that should make every American furious about this situation.

Trump has already proven his crime crackdown works in Washington, D.C.

Trump deployed over 2,200 troops to patrol Washington, D.C. two weeks ago, and the results speak for themselves: just one murder in the entire time they’ve been on the streets.⁸

One homicide in two weeks in a major American city.

Compare that to Chicago’s six deaths in a single weekend, and you start to understand why Pritzker and Johnson are so desperate to keep Trump’s help away.

They’d rather let their constituents die than admit Trump’s approach actually saves lives.

You want to know what this really tells us about the modern Democrat Party?

They care more about opposing Trump than protecting the people who elected them.

At the same conference, Pritzker told Trump to not come to Chicago, as he is “neither wanted here nor needed here.”⁹

Tell that to the families of those six people who died last weekend.

Tell that to the 27 people who got shot while Pritzker was busy playing politics.

The real victims here aren’t these politicians’ wounded pride – they’re the working families trapped in neighborhoods where Democrat policies have turned everyday life into a survival game.

If Trump gets credit for fixing Chicago’s crime problem, it exposes just how badly Democrats have failed at their most basic job: keeping people safe.

That’s why they’re fighting him tooth and nail, even as the body count keeps climbing.

The choice couldn’t be clearer: Trump’s proven approach that actually works, or more of the same failed policies that have turned Chicago into America’s murder capital.

The people of Chicago deserve better than politicians who’d rather see them suffer than admit they’re wrong.

KOMMONSENTSJANE – Congressman Bill Huizenga Here…

09/05/2025

 Bill Huizenga here.

What I’m about to share is the most shocking development we’ve seen since Russiagate broke wide open.

🚨 Tulsi Gabbard just went public with a bombshell:

Barack Obama ordered U.S. intelligence agencies to rewrite their findingsjust to take down Donald Trump.

That’s not politics. That’s SABOTAGE.

Let’s walk through what we now know:

👉 U.S. intel said Russia had no real impact on the 2016 election.

👉 Obama didn’t like that, so he forced them to change it.

👉 They used the Clinton-funded Steele Dossier—a proven fake.

👉 They LEAKED it to the press, pushed LIES, and tried to CRUSH Trump’s presidency before it even began.

This was a weaponized government ATTACK against the will of the voters.

And now, with President Trump back in the White House and our majority in Congress razor-thin…

It’s time to EXPOSE the truth and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

That’s why I’m calling on 10,000 America First patriots to complete my official Russiagate Justice Poll before MIDNIGHT.

Patriot, if we don’t act now, the Left will bury this.

They’re already pouring MILLIONS into Michigan to FLIP this seat and stop our investigation in its tracks.

I’m the firewall. I’m on the FRONTLINE of this fight.

If we lose, so does our chance at truth, justice—and the full four years of the Trump Administration.

Let’s make sure that never happens.

EXPOSE THE TRUTH

.For America,

Congressman Bill Huizenga

****

The left has put our country through Hell for 12 years, it is time for justice which will put our country back on track.
