An Illinois Republican state lawmaker, Representative Chris Miller, has filed articles of impeachment against Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging the governor engaged in conduct “incompatible with the duties of his office” by inciting violence through several public statements. The articles were filed on Friday, September 12, 2025.![]()
In a statement, Rep. Miller asserted that Governor Pritzker “has failed to uphold the oath of protecting the Illinois Constitution and has failed to protect the citizens of Illinois.” He specifically cited three instances from earlier this year as evidence of the governor’s alleged misconduct.
The first example provided in the impeachment articles is from Governor Pritzker’s State of the State address on or about February 19, 2025. Rep. Miller’s filing quotes the governor as saying, “It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic,” and compares Republicans to the Nazi party of 1930s Germany.
The second instance cited is from a speech given by Governor Pritzker at the 2025 Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Dinner on or about March 22, 2025.
The articles quote the governor as stating, “Bullies respond to one thing, and one thing only, a punch in the face,” and “I won’t continue to advocate that we wage a conventional political fight when what we really need is to become street fighters.”
Finally, the impeachment articles refer to remarks Governor Pritzker made in Manchester, New Hampshire on or about April 27, 2025.

Rep. Miller’s filing quotes the governor as saying, “Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption, but I am now. These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace.”
The filing of impeachment articles is the initial step in a process that would require a majority vote in the Illinois House of Representatives to move forward. If the articles were to pass the House, the Illinois Senate would then hold a trial to determine whether to remove the governor from office.![]()
