This is hard to believe when our ground transportation in the U.S. doesn’t even have a high speed train?

A persistent vision is the ambitious proposal for a tunnel connecting Britain and the United States, an immense project with an estimated cost of £15.6 trillion.

The future’s infrastructure projects could revolutionize travel by eliminating the distance between far-off destinations, making what once seemed remote just a short trip away.

Despite the vast 3,400-mile gap, America and Britain maintain a “special relationship” and strong connections.

Currently, a flight from New York to London takes about eight hours, but advocates of the transatlantic tunnel believe it could reduce travel time to that of a typical morning commute.

This century-old concept involves building a tunnel beneath the Atlantic Ocean, which reaches depths of several miles in certain areas.German high speed train

For comparison, the Channel Tunnel stretches a mere 23.5 miles under the sea between England and France and required six years to complete.

Over time, various methods have been proposed for the Transatlantic Tunnel, including routes entirely below the seabed, above it, or a hybrid of both.

Some have envisioned a submerged floating tunnel, positioned roughly 49 meters below the ocean surface, assembled from countless pre-made segments and cables.

This innovative design aims to enable train travel between continents, circumventing the intense pressure of the deep sea while avoiding surface obstacles like ships and extreme weather conditions.

While most agree that the structure would be designed for trains rather than cars, as car journeys would take several days and require additional infrastructure to support drivers.

Vactrains could theoretically reach speeds of up to 5,000mph, shrinking the travel time from London to New York City to a mere 54 minutes.

Jet propulsion has also been suggested as a method to propel the carriages at high speed, but this approach would necessitate an 18-minute deceleration period after reaching maximum speed to ensure safe arrival on the other side.

Despite the massive costs and logistical challenges associated with the concept, no serious proposals are currently under consideration by governments on either side of the Atlantic.

However, in a world where reusable rockets are commonplace and AI is becoming smarter every day, the idea of popping down to London for an afternoon doesn’t seem so outlandish.

(Rockets – no thanks.)
