Trip to Detroit
Vice President Kamala Harris made a trip to Michigan for an event with Oprah Winfrey, as reported by Benzinga.com. Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell condemned the visit, however, noting that it will fail to bring change.
Harris participated in a livestream event with Oprah Winfrey, “Unite for America,” targeting undecided voters. The 90-minute event covered her plans to cut middle-class costs, restore abortion rights, and address gun violence.
Lack of Support
Pastor Sewell criticized Harris for her lack of support over the past four years, pointing out that Detroit was ranked the neediest city in America in 2021 regarding healthcare, home values, and crime.
All She Can Do
“The only thing Vice President Harris can do by coming to Detroit is try to convince people that, because she’s Black, she cares,” Sewell said. “That’s all she can do. She hasn’t done anything else.”
A Superficial Effort
Sewell argued that her visit is merely a superficial effort to gain support rather than addressing serious issues, such as the poor literacy rates in the school system.
Genuine Care
He expressed frustration, stating that Harris’s presence does not equate to genuine care or action for the community.
Gave a Platform
“At least President Trump came to my church, heard from entrepreneurs, and gave me a platform,” Sewell said. “I am preaching the gospel, and people are being educated.”
“Can you imagine it? A kid from the eastside of Detroit,” Sewell said. “My dad’s in prison for murder. My mom was beaten every week—I saw it. My sister just got out of jail. Can you imagine it? I was a drug dealer. Jesus saved my life, and now I have preached to billions of people.”
Irrelevant
“Detroit was voted the neediest city in America in 2021 in terms of access to health care, home values and crime during her time as vice president,” Sewell said. “Her visit to Detroit is irrelevant.
A Slight Lead
Recent polls show that Harris holds a slight lead over former President Trump in Michigan, with strong support from Blacks.
