Mainstream Media Moves to Take Down the New Media

In the past week, the mainstream media has tried it’s best to take down the new media. Vox, the New York Times, and CNET have been at the forefront of this attack, and as it stands today, they have succeeded in shutting down several new media personalities.
YouTube has been the face of the new media due to its decentralized nature and a wide variety of opinions. The New York Times wrote a hit piece calling many liberals members of the far-right, Vox contributor Carlos Maza had Steven Crowder of Blaze TV demonetized, and a CNET writer wrote a hit piece about podcast host, Jeremy Hambly, better known as TheQuartering. All these pieces coming out in quick succession has triggered drastic changes to YouTube that have left many on the right penniless.
Here is what happened and what it means for the new media:
1.) Suspected Coordination

It is believed that Vox and the New York Times had a coordinated effort to disrupt new media. A tweet by the author of the NYT’s piece reveals that he was announcing an upcoming article about the right and their presence on the internet. This tweet was liked by Carlos Maza, the man who would go on to get right-wing commentators and history videos demonetized or banned just days before the New York Times piece.
2.) How they get advertizers to leave.

Center-left journalist Tim Pool reported on a set of leaked emails he received that show journalists getting companies to abandon individual personalities. A Slate journalist emailed Chase Bank asking why their services were being used by a right-wing group online, and why they supported this group. These leading questions were confirmed by Chase Bank when Tim Pool questioned them about the legitimacy of the leaked email. Pool went on to explain that this was an industry technique used by activists masquerading as journalists.
3.)Carlos Maza

Carlos Maza, a personality on Vox, complained to YouTube over Twitter that the BlazeTV star Steven Crowder was harassing him and that he had been doxed.
YouTube initially stated that they were not going to do anything about it as Crowder had not violated their rules, after media pressure; however, they were quick to demonetize all of Crowder’s content.
Carlos Maza’s complaint also affected a long list of accounts that posted history videos for teachers; he even went as far as to mock those educational accounts on Twitter.
4.) CNET Hit Piece

Coincidentally, CNET released a piece talking about commentary channels on YouTube, specifically on the gaming side of the video sharing giant.
Their exposé has resulted in multiple accounts losing sponsorships, a crucial part of their business.
Impartial observers suspect these accounts will be effectively shadowbanned hurt their revenues for years to come.
The accounts talk about tech news and get industry information from inside sources.
Ironically, they have been targeted in the past over their wish to keep politics out of the entertainment industry.
5.) Milton Friedman is Far-Right?

When The New York Times released its piece about the supposedly far-right on YouTube, they listed a wide variety of people in their headline picture. This picture included a small photo of Milton Freedmen, the famous libertarian economist.
It also included a photo of left-wing YouTuber, Philip Defranco, a commentator who is widely considered progressive.
The newspaper’s images would suggest these two are far-right, a term that for the mainstream media is synonymous with alt-right.
6.) The future of new media.

This coordinated attack shows us once again that no one is safe from the power of the overwhelmingly liberal, legacy media.
It also further cements the power of the journalist-activists working at the New York Times, Vox, and other mainstream outlets.
Conservatives must be vigilant – and prepared to fight back. More articles and hit pieces will come in the future because of this tactic, however cynical, is tried and true.
