GOP Senator Bristles At CNN Host’s Suggestion He Is ‘Being Used’ By Trump

A CNN interview Tuesday stopped short of contention when Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner expressed his objection to host Brooke Baldwin’s line of questioning regarding an upcoming White House briefing on the situation in North Korea.
The Colorado lawmaker brought up Wednesday’s meeting in response to a question about his perception of President Donald Trump’s ability to work with Congress.
“What do you make of how the president is doing business with those of you on Capitol Hill?” Baldwin asked.
“I think if you look at the interaction between this administration and previous administrations — tomorrow, all of us have been invited to a briefing on North Korea,” Gardner said. “I don’t ever recall going over to the White House for a briefing on a national-security issue in the past; so I think they’re trying to build a relationship on both sides of the aisle.”
As Western Journalism reported, the entire Senate was invited to the meeting, which will include briefings from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and other administration officials. The unusual move prompted Baldwin to dig further.
After noting an existing facility on Capitol Hill is typically used for such briefings, she asked her guest why he thought he and the nation’s other senators were invited to the White House.
“That’s where the meeting is at,” Gardner replied, going on to tell Baldwin he believes “arguing over where a meeting is going to be on North Korea is about the stupidest thing Washington could be doing.”
Baldwin followed up by citing “critics” who think Trump might be staging the event for maximum exposure as the end of his first 100 days in office draws near.
When asked whether he felt senators were “being used” by the administration, Garnder laughed and pointed to what he believes is the more important narrative.

“I think we’re talking about North Korea,” he said. “We’re talking about a regime that has dozens of nuclear weapons, that is testing them, that is violating United Nations sanctions.”
Calling any peripheral argument about the briefing’s location “stupid” and “ridiculous,” Gardner urged the nation’s leaders to instead “fight about the policy on North Korea” and “the right direction for this country.”
Such misplaced priorities, he concluded, have contributed to Congress’ perpetually low approval rating.
