As you venture out into public, maybe to do a little Christmas shopping or simply to get dinner, you will probably hear the words, “Happy Holidays.” This phrase is the politically correct way of not offending anyone by saying “Merry Christmas.”
While the idea behind it may have some merit to it, I think it does a great deal of injustice.
CHRISTmas is the celebration of Christ’s birth. Along the way, other traditions have made their way into the holiday’s celebrations, however, the concept is still the same.
I will continue to say “Merry Christmas” during this December holiday, but not because it may be offensive to others. Not because I want to make liberals angry.
No, I will continue to say it because it means something to me. It means that I am acknowledging that Jesus Christ came back to this earth and died for my sins. I am remembering the fact that Mary held her newborn child, and had to know that he was sent to save every generation, as she kissed his little forehead. I am showing my respect for the son of God who was tortured so that we may have eternal life.
While we bake cookies, wrap presents, and take photos with santa, we must still remember the true meaning of Christmas. Even if you are not religious, you cannot ignore the holiday’s origins.
So Merry Christmas to you all, and a Happy New Year as well.
