DNC’s Donna Brazile Denies Giving Hillary Clinton Early Access to Town Hall Question

Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile denied tipping off Hillary Clinton’s campaign after an email published by WikiLeaks Tuesday purported to show her passing along a question in advance of a March 13 town hall hosted by CNN.
Brazile was at the time a contributor to CNN but stepped away from the cable network to become the interim chairwoman of the DNC after Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., stepped down from the chairmanship in July after the first emails stolen from DNC servers were leaked on the eve of the party’s convention.
“From time to time I get the questions in advance,” Brazile, formerly an adviser to President Bill Clinton, allegedly wrote in the email subject line, dated March 12, a day before the town hall. The email was contained in a trove of emails leaked from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s inbox.
“Here’s one that worries me about HRC,” the email, addressed to Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, reads.
“19 states and the District of Columbia have banned the death penalty. 31 states, including Ohio, still have the death penalty. According to the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, since 1973, 156 people have been on death row and later set free. Since 1976, 1,414 people have been executed in the U.S. That’s 11% of Americans who were sentenced to die, but later exonerated and freed. Should Ohio and the 30 other states join the current list and abolish the death penalty?”
Ultimately, the question posed about the death penalty at the town hall was different than the one in the email.
On Tuesday, CNN forcefully denied sending the question to Clinton’s team.
“To be perfectly clear, we have never, ever given a town hall question to anyone beforehand,” CNN vice president of communications Barbara Levin said in a statement.
Brazile, meanwhile, said she was in touch with “each and every” Democratic campaign, but did not tip Clinton off to a town hall question ahead of time.
“As a longtime political activist with deep ties in our party, I supported all of our candidates for president. I often shared my thoughts with each and every campaign, and any suggestions that indicate otherwise are simply untrue,” she wrote in a statement. “As it pertains to the CNN Debates, I never had access to questions and would never have shared them with the candidates if I did.”
The Obama administration has formally implicated Russia in the hacks of Democrats’ internal systems, an extraordinary accusation that came with a warning that the Kremlin may attempt a “disinformation campaign” like it has waged in attempts to influence other countries’ elections.
Republican nominee Donald Trump has expressed unusual warmth toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has made no effort to hide his preference for Trump over Clinton, admitting his intention to hurt her campaign in releasing documents stolen from her aides and allies.
In at least one case – documents allegedly stolen from the Clinton Foundation that purported to show evidence of a pay-to-play scheme – seem to have been faked.
Brazile echoed those warnings in her statement Tuesday, chiding Trump and other Republicans for using the leaked documents to criticize Clinton.
“Our intelligence community has made it clear that the Russian government is responsible for the cyberattacks aimed at interfering with our election, and that WikiLeaks is part of that effort. This revelation should deeply trouble all Americans in both parties,” Brazile wrote in her statement.
“And yet, Donald Trump continues to deny that Russia is behind these attempts to meddle with our electoral process and cheer on these efforts to undermine our democracy,” she continued. “This is the same man who called for more Russian cyber-espionage against us, who has extensive business ties to Russia, and who regularly coddles Vladimir Putin by praising his leadership and refusing to call him out. I am deeply disappointed that the Republican leaders of the party of Reagan are publicly using information illegally obtained by the Russians, because the national security of our country should not be a partisan issue.”
Although she denied passing on the town hall question to Clinton, Brazile did not specifically claim the email was fake.
“We are in the process of verifying the authenticity of these documents because it is common for Russia to spread misinformation and forge documents,” she said. “But we cannot bow down to Putin’s wishes and allow foreign actors to try and divide our country with the hope of affecting the outcome on Election Day. There is too much at stake.”
