Someone is learning & practicing how to take down the Internet — Fellowship of the Minds

This is serious and genuinely alarming. Bruce Schneider is an expert in cyber-security, the Chief Technology Officer of Resilient, an IBM Company, a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center, and a board member of Electronic Frontier Foundation — an organization defending our rights in the digital world. It is very serious when the internet goes off-line, especially for companies and businesses, and my response is that all companies who have been attached those who have not  should have a back-up plan to be able to continue their business.  In other words have people perform their work the old-fashioned way – by hand.  What would you do if the power grid was taken down and you couldn’t use the computer?

In earlier days, we had fire drills and were taught how to react in case of a fire or the country was attacked.  When you take a cruise you have an exercise when you start the cruise – how to react and what station to go to – so why wouldn’t every business react to protect their company or business.  Families should do this same thing with family members – that is how to react and where to go or meet if anythingshwould happen.

A good example was – I was in a department store and their computer system went out while I was trying to check out and everything came to a stand still with the clerk replying – I can’t check you out the system is down.  My question was – you mean to tell me you don’t have a back-up plan to actually take the price of the goods and adding the 8.5% tax?  She said “NO.”  She said she did not know how to do that.  Therefore, my suggestions to all companies is to have a back-up plan –  which is teaching your employees what to do if the system goes down.

We have to learn how to respond and practice how to respond now – not after it happens which is too late..
