Sunday Devotional: ‘Every one who exalts himself will be humbled’ — Fellowship of the Minds

Sirach 3:17-18 My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. People often wonder what humility means or what is the definition of humility. In the Bible, humility or humbleness is a quality of being courteously respectful of others. It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity.

Being the last one on the totem pole taught me early one that I was not the most important person on the scene. Learning to listen and respond to each other for the good of the whole family was always the goal.  When this did not happen and one person tried to put that square peg in a round hole and not serve a common good – things would fall apart. All of us were guilty at one time or another trying to force the good of the whole in a certain direction and this would happen.

We have to realize that we always do not know what is best  or that – our goals and talents – are the most important.  As a family unit, from the oldest to the youngest, it seems we all took turns to urge and help each other to reach for the stars and use the talents God gave us.  It is important for us to allow others to say what they need and how we can help before we assume to know the solution or how it should happen.  We are all equals regardless of who we think we are.

So what can each of us do in this world from a humility or service standpoint?  Some people apply themselves in the community service area and some donate to charity organizations such as Shriners Hospital for Children where there is so much work being done for children who are not able to pay and St. Judes Children Hospital where children from all walks of life are given a second chance to be normal.
