KOMMONSENTSJANE – PELOSI HECKLED AT CONVENTION

Pelosi Just Got Bad News at Democrat Convention

The Democratic National Convention was off to a shaky start on Monday morning during the California delegation breakfast featuring House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi and several other Democrats spoke to the Californians, and any time Hillary Clinton’s name was mentioned, the delegates jeered and chanted for Sen. Bernie Sanders who lost to Clinton in the primaries.

The leading House Democrat tried to talk about the commonalities between Sanders and Clinton supporters, but her call for unity was met with Sanders signs and chants for “Bernie,” according to Roll Call.

Although Sanders won just 43 percent of the Californian Democratic primary vote in June, compared to Hillary Clinton’s 56 percent, the delegates were loudly discontented with Clinton’s nomination, and there was nothing Pelosi could say to ease their concerns.

“The differences that we have are not so great compared to the chasm between us and Republicans,” she told the crowd, which wasn’t appeased.

Many of the delegates were likely upset about the recent leak of Democratic National Committee documents that suggested corruption and an unfair bias toward Clinton in the primary process.

Pelosi said she appreciated Sanders for staying in the race until June because his candidacy brought out high numbers of Democrats who also voted for down-ballot candidates.

The crowd, however, wasn’t interested in the consolation prize, and one delegate even shoved a Sanders sign in the representative’s face.

After the tense breakfast, Pelosi tried to downplay the obvious discord among those in her party, according to Roll Call.

“Well, you know, it’s the Democratic Party,” she said when asked about the implications of a party’s presumptive nominee being booed. “We’ve never been a monolith, and we’ve always tried to reach consensus. But unanimity has never — it’s just an impossibility for any party.”
