Family Turned Their Backs For Ship Photo, Shouldn’t Have Ignored Warning

A family had just boarded a cruise ship departing from Galveston, Texas when they decided to take several photos to commemorate the trip. They picked what they thought would be the perfect place and turned their backs for a brief second, having no idea what was about to happen until it was already too late.

Just a couple of hours after the massive Carnival Liberty cruise ship set sail, it was returning back to port after a family’s nightmare became a reality. The unidentified couple and their toddler didn’t see the danger or realize the warning until their little girl suffered the consequences.

The first order of business for many vacationers is a snapshot with their camera at the start of the trip to capture the bon voyage and the start of a memorable time. Unfortunately, this particular shot would document a bad memory when they posed against the stair railing on the 14th deck of the ship.
As soon as the parents put their backs up against the railing and smiled, their 3-year-old managed to accidentally slip through the gaps and plunged two decks down. Her estimated fall was 12 to 15 feet before she came to a crash landing on the 12th deck, KGNS reported.

Ship personnel rushed to her rescue and carefully transported the child to Carnival’s medical center for evaluation before realizing her injuries were extensive enough that it was beyond what they could remedy aboard. The ship flipped around and returned to port, where the victim was alert and stable when taken by paramedics onto dry land.

Although the toddler will eventually recover, it serves as a lesson to be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially with small children in tow. Safety signs were posted around the ship, and if the gaps in the railing seemed too wide, someone should have held their daughter’s hand.

There is no such thing as a perfect parent and accidents do happen, but this could have been avoided. Perhaps a family-oriented cruise ship like this one shouldn’t make it so easy for a kid to fall through the railings as well.

(Thank you Amanda for an excellent warning for parents – kids are quick on their feet and you must hold their hands when they are out in public, especially in a situation such as this. Although they could at least have some chicken wire behind the railings.)
