May 6 marks Sigmund Freud’s 160th birthday, but the latest therapeutic trend owes more to the printer scene in Office Space than it does to the father of psychoanalysis.
In April, a new service was revealed. It is called the Anger Room. It is a facility that invites people to destroy fake offices or living rooms. The idea is to provide a place for people to safely lash out without any consequences, thereby relieving pent-up aggression. Each Anger Room is filled with breakable items – from couches and desks to old computers and TV’s. Mannequins are also available.
Clients are provided with a sledgehammer and the choice of a five-minute, “I need a break” session” which costs $25, a 15-minute “lash-out costs $45, or a 25-minute “total demolition is $75. Those who have used the service include stay-at-home parents, hospitality workers, and high-level executives.
The owner states that the Anger Room is steadily gaining in popularity – not only for the therapeutic benefits but also offers working stiffs a place to de-stress.
In the end, if this doesn’t accommodate those who want to smash stuff up for fun, they do handle more serious anger issues in their services.
These facilities are available in Dallas, New York City, and Chicago. In the fall, the company will roll out in Seattle, Atlanta, and Miami.
