Why is it these young people have such a hard time dealing with reality? Here is a young man who had the world as his oyster and continues to thumb his nose at it? Is it the drinking, the drugs, or the company he keeps? It is baffling when young people throw their life away.
It happens every day and it is so sad. A good example is – here is a Grandmother who drives two hours every day to her job. She has one of these daughters that just can’t get it together. The daughter has three children – two by the same father and one by another father. She just can’t seem to get her life together roaming with the wrong crowd – bars and drinking.
The children were removed from the home due to neglect of the children. The Grandmother had to go to court to assume responsibility for these children. My question was did the young lady have her tubes tied so there would not be any more children – No! Why not – because the young lady cried – I might want to have one more child. Doesn’t that blow you away – here is a person who can’t take care of the three she has or herself, thinks about having another child, and now the Grandmother has to work and take care of three grand children. That is how irresponsible this age group is. So what is the solution or is there one?
There are so many young people who would love to just have one of those pieces of fame that this young man has had and never get and then you have this young man that doesn’t seem to want any one of those pieces. It is not that he doesn’t have the athletic ability that God gave him – but continues to strike the wrong chord on the keyboard of success.
There is virtually no interest around the NFL in Johnny Manziel right now. The former Browns quarterback — released by Cleveland shortly after the start of the league year — is still facing off-field issues relating to an alleged assault on his then-girlfriend Colleen Crowley.
One team provides the ultimate litmus test for whether Manziel can be employed. Jerry Jones, long obsessed with Manziel, nearly drafted him in 2013 (and instead took Zack Martin for the Cowboys; smart move!) and has hardly cooled on his appreciation of Manziel.
But he told Peter King of TheMMQB.com he isn’t interested in signing Manziel, although he went the long way about of saying it.
“What’s got to get out of my mind is my concern for him, just his well being. I can get past the football thing. I know a lot of people don’t think I can, but I really can,” Jones said. “Anybody should be rooting for and concerned about him getting his life together. I have the same impression when he came out of A&M of what his potential is as a football player.
“You can be the smartest mathematician, you can be the greatest politician. But if you can’t get it straight with your life, you don’t get those chances. So I’m more concerned with that, and with that in mind, not thinking about where he is to football and the Cowboys.”
King pressed Jones about what Manziel would specifically need to do (i.e., rehab) in order to be worthy of a spot on the Cowboys. And Jones said he hasn’t “changed my opinion” on Manziel as a football player. However …
“I haven’t changed my opinion of how exciting a player that he is, how unique a player that he is,” Jones said. “And he plays a unique position. We have an old adage in talent evaluation — if you see them do it a couple of times, they can do it.
“Now will they have the discipline to go out there and do it day in and day out and do like a Peyton Manning and make a career out of doing it everyday? That hasn’t been shown.”
Comparing Manziel to Peyton Manning makes little sense. Manziel’s shown no willingness to be disciplined in any aspect of his life — Manning was the most disciplined person in football for nearly two decades.
Manziel likely believes he will always land on his feet. But the reality is the only team really willing to take a gamble on him (and the same team that took a gamble on another Drew Rosenhaus client, Greg Hardy, last year) isn’t even really considering the idea of bringing him in.
It’s very clear Jones would be willing to bring in a cleaned-up Manziel; however, don’t shut the door entirely – just yet.
Hopefully, Johnny Football will find that oyster which has the real pearl and not the beer.
