A new study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin seems to show that men prefer not to date women who are smarter than them. Researchers found that men would say that they were interested in general in smart women, and rated fake women highly, Women’s Health reports.

Men in the study weren’t interested in women smarter than them.

But when confronted with actual women in real life who were smarter than them, they lost interest. The men in the study, upon meeting a woman they were told was brilliant, “distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive, and showed less desire to exchange contact information or plan a date with her,” the study reads.
