KOMMONSENTSJANE – DON’T TREAD ON ME

cars1

One of the most dangerous things you can do when you are behind the wheel of a car is tailgate the car in front of you.  You should always observe the three-second rule to give yourself time to react if the driver ahead of you blows a tire, slams on the brakes, or just generally does the unexpected.

Every now and then we need to refresh our thinking about the three-second rule in driving.  You identify a landmark coming up on the road.  At that point, begin counting as the driver in front of you passes it.  If you pass that same landmark in fewer than three seconds, you are too close.

Reduce your speed or pass the drive who is in front of you, if you can.  At night, in poor weather or bad road conditions, increase the three seconds to 8 or 10 seconds.

If you have someone on your tail, move to the slow lane on the freeway, or, if necessary, engage your blinkers to let the other drive know he’s too close.
