Two Deeply Personal Stories from WordPress.com This Week

Reblogged from WordPress Personal Stories:

Reading these two stories spiked my memory of early days when we did not know what “came out of the closet” meant. I have known families who dealt with life in these circumstances. One instance was a retarded daughter who was never present when visiting the home but was in a room in the house. And only until she passed away did anyone know she was present in that home. It presented a sad picture of someone who was left out of life’s goodness.

The other was a young man who was very out going and was gay. Everyone understood the fact and loved him – it did not make  any difference. As I spoke to his mom one day, I asked her why this young man did not call her Mother, but called her by her first name. She did not have an answer except that is what he heard her being called by the Father and it was not corrected. My answer to her was – if I had brought that young man into the world and the pain and happiness a Mother goes through with a child – my child is going to refer to me until Death do us Part – as Mother – not Alice.
