The War on American Retirees – Has it Already Started? These representatives are always hollering about social security; but, they don’t look at the benefits and retirement they each government retiree receives.
Just think if they would put the money each retiree has invested in his social security into their own name and apply an interest of 6 percent from start to finish and then use their own named social security for their retirement – we wouldn’t have all of this chain yanking by our representatives complaining about our retirement.
But, no, they want to throw it into the General Fund of the government so when they need some spending money for themselves they just write an IOU and help themselves. And then complain – why there ain’t no money in social security which we continue to hear. Or better still give us the same benefits and retirement that these representatives in the government get then we wouldn’t have all of this haggling over social security.
A few years ago, Obama launched an “ambitious” scheme to slash Social Security benefits by up to $380 billion. It was actually congressional Democrats, worried about their own re-elections, that forced him to momentarily back off.
More recently, Chris Christie announced he wants to up the retirement age and to completely eliminate Social Security benefits for millions who have paid into the system for decades.
Christie would end Social Security for individuals making $200,000 a year on other income. Plus he’ll raise the retirement age to 69, up the age to qualify for Medicare to 67 while eliminating payroll taxes for seniors who choose to work. (Did he stick his foot in his mouth? If they do not receive any they should not have to contribute.)
The 2016 presidential candidates pounced, calling it ‘a war on the eldery’ and ‘an insult.’
Social Security benefits are a political football. No matter how the politicians phrase it, both sides are waging a benefit war on American retirees.
And in fact, cuts are on the horizon. In just two years Social Security benefits will be cut, as required in agreement passed by Congress in 1983. Plus, in 2017 the current retirement age will begin to rise, capping out at 67 in the year 2022.
This is the Social Security all Americans have paid into their entire working lives.
