In the hill country if we want fresh seafood we always head for the LaFour’s Seafood restaurant in Kerrville, Texas, The restaurant is run by Freda and Otis LaFour. The restaurant has been in business for 32 years with four generations who manage and work in the restaurant. The kitchen is managed by Dwayne, who is their son. Their home prior to moving to Kerrville was the coastal area.
The following is the story of their restaurant and how they decided this is the type of labor of love they wanted to invest their lives in:
If you’ve ever spent a morning hunting, particularly in a cold wet duck blind, you would definitely be able to appreciate the meaning of a piping hot plate of food prepared with only the deepest love and dedication. As far back as any of us can remember, and certainly years before that, Mable LaFour (Maw Maw as everyone knew her) cooked those heartwarming dishes for her family and the duck hunters they guided. There was never a complaint as she put her energy toward every pain staking step and irreplaceable detail. As children, we all sat in her kitchen, on the counter or on a step stool to learn the passion and meaning that should go into preparing a meal. That devotion carried through in every action of Maw Maw’s life and she left her legacy to live on through our generation to the next.
We have been taught that food is a vessel to demonstrate love. Families eat together and bond over meals. Days like Thanksgiving and Christmas are embellished with the joy of family meals. We step away from the television, set our phones aside and enjoy each other’s company – no distractions, just something warm and nutritious, surrounded by company so grand that only God himself could have hand-picked them for us.
This particular evening, I noticed their great granddaughter, McKensie, who has an assigned table in the restaurant was with Great Grandmother Freda and, as usual, they were having a tea party which is part of the ritual for McKensie’s day at the restaurant. Yes, these children are trained early about the restaurant business.
So if you want any kind of fresh seafood, you won’t be disappointed.
