KOMMONSENTSJANE – CLASS REUNIONS AND THE GOLDEN YEARS OF SCHOOL

Don’t you love class reunions.  I attended high school at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas.  Our mascot was the “Ganders.”  My class has luncheons every three months. We can only attend  once a year because of the drive and other responsibilities.  When reaching the restaurant and people are standing around talking and you don’t recognize everyone, you immediately think, surely he or she remarried and this is a new addition to their family since I don’t recognize them.  But sure enough, when you look at their name tag you realize, yes, it is one of my classmates.  Then they walk up to you and say, hello, don’t you remember me?  At that time, you say, just look at  you, I am so sorry but I do not have my glasses on and my eyes do not focus since I have had my cataracts removed.  You would not say, I am sorry, but I do not recognize you.   All the while, you really did not recognize them because some years have passed.  But, in my eyes, they were just as handsome or as beautiful as I remembered them.

Now that we have email, we keep in touch with who is ill and need prayers, who just remarried, who just had something to happen that was special,  or the sad email when someone passes away.  But nothing beats seeing all of your classmates in person and saying that prayer before our meal and thanking the Lord for sending us through this moment in time when we were so lucky to have parents that spanked our butts when we misbehaved (for you young folks we called that discipline).  Although now the parents could possibly go to jail for child abuse.  We played outside at our home or in the park, we walked to the movie theater alone, and left our doors and cars unlocked at night.  We went to school, had recess and play day, and even had teachers that taught us how to read, write, and add and subtract at the same time.  We graduated, some with honors, and went to college or work.  The endless opportunities were there; and, now it shows that all of my classmates took advantage of those opportunities.  Our classmates were the lucky ones because the country was prosperous and jobs were plentiful.  So Lord, thank you again for sending us through life when you did because I feel so sad for the people who are just entering this world because someone forgot to check the country’s engine or change the oil, have worn the tires down to the treads, and the car is overloaded.  And to think our parents worked so hard to pay for this country and make it better for us and look at it now.

I thank all of my classmates for the many good times we shared during our school years and for each of them for playing a part in my life which only made me a better person for having shared their values with me.
