Driving down the highways of the world certainly calls to mind the habit of how people treat their own turf. It seems America’s and even Mexico’s citizens have a bad habit of discarding anything while driving down the highway or walking on the streets of their countries. It seems like most countries have pride in their highways because you don’t see very much litter. Whatever happened in taking pride by helping to keep your country free of litter? I see soda cans, wrappers from meals, food, and just about anything on the sides of highways – mattresses, sofas, refrigerators, chairs – you name it and it is visible for the world to see – you probably could furnish a house with the used furniture on the sides of the highway. You have a litter box for your cat, if you have one – so why wouldn’t you have a litter box for yourself? When you discard anything out of the window of your vehicle while travelling and everyone does the same thing can you understand why we have so much litter? We hear a lot about global warming which to me is a joke for the government of the world to siphon more money out of their people for these politicians to steal. But, the idea of junking your country when you throw out items instead of having a bag in your car for litter and then putting it in your own garbage for pick-up is nothing new. I bet “Mama taught better!” Just remember when you throw something out the window as you are travelling always think, “Didn’t Mama teach me better?|
The idea of saving the environment is nothing new to us. Everyone has been taught that a clean and healthy environment is left up to each individual. Each town has strips of the highway which indicate that someone is looking after that strip for litter; but that doesn’t mean you have to pile-on them by adding to the litter. Part of the credit goes to our state’s “Don’t Mess With Texas” program which is sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation and which has helped. It has reduced litter by about 72-percent. We have programs like Texas’ Adopt a Beach where we have volunteers who are cleaning up the lakes, rivers, and coastline of Texas. Texas also has an Earth Day which highlights environmental activities and problems.
We do have to the hold the government in check because they have a tendency to throw a tax on us and then use it for their own personal needs. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working day and night to put more restrictions on businesses and tax the people and the businesses in the U.S. which hurts our economy and jobs. We have done our part in this country; but, other countries like India and China are not doing their part because they don’t care and they know it would throw their economy in reverse. So we need to stand back and let them catch up. We realize we cannot save the whole world; but, I bet we can help save three-fourths of it – isn’t that what we have been doing since Adam and Eve?
So the next time you are rolling down the highway and open your window to discard some litter – ” stop, look, and listen to MAMA!”
