On June 17, 1972, in the early hours, several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) which was located in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. History has proven that this was no ordinary robbery. The burglars were a part of President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign. They were attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents when they were caught. The historians are not sure Nixon knew about the Watergate espionage operation before it happened but he took steps to cover it up afterwards. Hush money was raised for the burglars, trying to stop the FBI from investigating the crime, destroying evidence and firing uncooperative staff members. In August, 1974, after his role in the Watergate conspiracy had finally come to light, the president resigned. Gerald Ford, his successor, immediately pardoned Nixon for all the crimes he committed or may have committed while in office. Nixon was never prosecuted, the Watergate scandal changed American politics forever, leading many Americans to question their leadership and think more critically about the presidency and the government.
My purpose in renewing the history of Nixon brings to light the scandals the country is presently witnessing, i.e., the NSA data mining of all of our phones and emails all over the world, the Benghazi scandal and the death of four people, the IRS scandal, the fast and furious scandal and the death of a border patrol agent, the Arizona ranch scandal, the VA scandal where many died trying to receive medical treatment, and now the release of five high value Guantanamo prisoners (where many soldiers died capturing these prisoners}.
Just think, all Nixon was involved in was possibly burglary and bugging some phones and the burglars got caught and people went to prison. Whereas, we have a leader in this administration who listened and bugged the whole world’s phones (including Germany’s Prime Minister Angela Merkel’s cell phone) and computers and got caught, plus all of the other listed scandals. What is the difference?
