TO FLY THE COOP!

What a wonderful week and a half at the beach!  The computer and its words were left at home alone to rest. The days were spent reading, sleeping, eating, and visiting with relatives and friends.  The wind was blowing hard and the waves were slapping against the shore.  And it was cold!  On Saturday, a couple of flounders seem surprised when they were caught from the bank.  Very few people were trying to fish because of the cold weather. The experienced fishermen continued to tell everyone that the fish still think it is winter and have not “come in.”  They  were grumbling that it is spring and we should be having some different type of weather.  Even one of them laughingly capitulated that it might even be caused by global warming  in order to stir the conversation.  On that note, I thought it was best to leave the conversation.  The wind and the waves were certainly  not compatible with the boat so the boat was not in action for fishing.   We were quite concerned about the oil spill in our area which was caused by a war of words between a tug boat and an oil tanker with the tug boat captain taking a chance and failing to out-maneuver the oil tanker in the Houston Ship Channel.  It was rumored another tug behind it had cautioned the captain in the first tug that he was not going to be able to miss the ship – his reply was, that the ship would just have to slow down – which never happened and, thus, the oil spill.  Do you think it had anything to do with respect?  I wonder who had the right-away in this case?  Did one of them not follow the rules of the road which would certainly have been appropriate in this case?   I would think the tug boat captain would pick on someone more his own size. Thank goodness, it did not affect our area.  Seems the wind was blowing the oil south and the clean up was being done in the Matagorda Bay area with tar balls on the beach.

We have a lot of birds at the beach and we do enjoy watching them from the deck and trying to decide what kind of bird it is.  How do we know it is a bird?  It is not because it can fly.  Bats and insects fly, and not all birds do!  There is one way to tell that a creature is a bird.  If it has feathers, it is a bird.  No other animal wears feathers. The  largest bird in the world is an ostrich – it is eight feet tall and weighs three hundred pounds.  The smallest bird is the hummingbird, and is the world’s most skilled flier.  It can maneuver up, down,  backward, and even swing sideways in the air.  One day,  I was reading and heard this rustling noise outside of the window.  When I walked over to the window it was a tiny one-legged sparrow bird and its toe was stuck inside of the screen.  It seemed the wind had actually pushed him into the screen.  He was screeching and trying to remove his little toe from the screen.  In the back ground, Beau, our puppy, seeing the bird was excited and barking.  I opened the window and pushed his tiny little toe out of the screen and in just a moment he flew away.  He had survived this ordeal and was off to a new destiny.  Meanwhile, Beau was not too happy and began to whin because our tiny little friend was gone.  Nothing soothes unhappiness for Beau better than a treat.
