The child of today is very fortunate because the parents take better care than at any other time in history. Parents of today have so much more information at their disposal. We watch our children grow at each step of the process. From birth when a child is unable to hold his head up, next step is to hold his head up, and then to his first steps which is all part of the growth of the child. Social behavior in a child indicates he lives in a world of his own. He learns to recognize faces but cannot recognize himself in a mirror until about the age of one. At the age of two he likes to be with other children but would rather play besides them rather than with them. Even when starting elementary school, children have to learn to take part in large groups.
Each normal child growing up passes through the same steps in development; but, each child passes through at different times – some early and some later. Heredity is one reason. Heredity can affect intelligence and temperament as well as physical characteristics, and physical characteristics in turn can affect behavior. Also the environment in which a child grows up affects his rate of growth and the direction of that growth. For example, children whose parents converse usually have more words than children whose parents do not. Everything a child does has some purpose and reason behind it. No behavior is aimless. The reasons for a child’s action may not be that which appears on the surface. Parents and teachers need to look for the reasons instead of merely try to stop it. And I am definitely against using any kind of medication to correct a child’s actions. Children must be given the patience, proper guidance and influence to achieve success.
