Even in America, different parts of the United States show that we have cultural food differences. Pinto beans have always been a staple in the south and it seems that people in the northern states do not eat them because they are considered food for animals according to my Yankee friends. Beans to Southerners are like rice to Asians. One of our co-workers in our office building always provided pinto beans cooked with rice, hamburger meat, canned tomatoes, onions and seasonings every Friday which was considered “casual Friday’s.” Some of the ladies would bring corn bread and dessert for additional temptation. The building always had the flavor of a kitchen. It cost only twenty-five cents for a small bowl and was very delicious. The pot was always empty by one o’clock. There were always a lot of contented working faces after lunch because this dish is so filling, especially if it was cold and rainy and you did not have to go out. Thanks to this fella, who was always the cook in the building.
