An investigation has found that public universities across the country where many students in the sports programs could read only up to an eighth-grade level. This does not speak well for their elementary and high school teachers. The data were obtained through the open records requests showed a staggering achievement gap between college athletes and their peers at the same institution. In one instance the student could not read or write. The reading levels were 60% read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. Between 8% and 10% read below a third-grade level. So what classes does a student take to receive a degree? It seems in one university many students were given grades for classes they didn’t attend and they did nothing more than turn in a single paper. Is this called social promotion? This is a disgrace that these young people are then sent out into the world to compete with nothing more than a piece of paper called a degree and an eighth-grade reading level. As we all know sports are a big business and the kids be damned. It looks like our education system needs to have a house cleaning and overhauled from the first grade through the college years – that includes administrators, teachers, and professors. How corrupt can you be – all at the expense of our children – leaving school with a debt that would choke anyone? I thought attending school and then college was to educate and to mold children for the future and adulthood?
