A butterfly is the most beautiful and graceful of the insects. Poets have called butterflies “winged flowers” and “flying gems.” Butterflies fly from flower to flower drinking the sweet liquid called nectar. At the same time, they make it possible for the flowers to develop into fruits and seeds by carrying pollen from one flower to another. It is hard to believe that a butterfly was once a wormlike creature called a “caterpillar.” Caterpillars hatch from the eggs of butterflies and later turn into butterflies. Butterflies themselves cannot do any harm to crops because they cannot bite or chew but as caterpillars can harm crops. Some persons believe the name came about because so many have the bright yellow color of butter.
The reason for the story is yesterday mid-morning I was walking our puppy and there were a lot of yellow butterflies in a flowering shrub by our garage enjoying the last bit of nectar in the flowers. After this bit of cold the shrub will freeze and will be pruned. It was 26 degrees at the time and during the night it was 16 degrees. I thought here I am shivering and this little bit of nothing was flying around like it was 80 degrees. I wonder where they slept last night and how did they keep warm? Another one of God’s wonders.
