Following is a church chuckle that I felt was so appropriate and directed toward our government administration, especially our leader.
The minister told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To prepare you for my sermon, I want all of you to read Mark 17.” The following Sunday, the minister asked all those who had read Mark 17, as requested, to raise their hands. Most of the congregation raised their hands. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the “sin of lying.”
What is a lie? It is a false statement or action made with the intent to deceive. Lying is intrinsically evil since it is an abuse of the faculties given us by God to communicate what is in our mind. The Mosaic Law forbade lying and God hates and destroys liars. Christians must speak the truth; otherwise, they are following the devil. Lying is forbidden by the eighth commandment. If through a lie, however, we inflict serious damage, we commit a mortal sin.
The big problem in our society is that our children beginning in the 1960’s were not taught the ten commandments. Therefore, they are not taught right from wrong. A lot of people have this theory – there is a grey area between right and wrong – that is when the lying started. We certainly need to teach our young people the ten commandments and that would certainly give them something to chew on for some time.
