It was a matter of surprise to me that the Plantation Party is telling all of their members that the American Dream is dead. As long as a person has passion for their goals that will never happen in America. In fact, we attended a reception last week for my husband’s niece and her new husband that proves the dream is still present. This young lady started her dream early on in wanting to be a doctor and to specialize in children’s health. The dream started in high school when she completed her first-year college courses upon graduating from high school as Valedictorian with a 4.0 gpa. But, greater achievement lay ahead. She was an accomplished gymnast and competed in competition during her high school tenure and four years of college in Hawaii all the while teaching and assisting her family in cheer leading and swimming lessons during the summer. Now that the final step is completed she has achieved her goal and graduated from Medical School and is now interning in a hospital working with children. I think of the years this young lady of determined mind and hard work spent to achieve her dream. In my mind I consider her a Wabi Sabi. – Wabi are things that are fresh and simple and Sabi are things that have beauty stemming from age. Lastly, this reminds me of a poem by Langston Hughes:
Hold fast to dreams – for if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams – for when dreams go
Life is a barren field – frozen with snow.
