Every time I remove the cover of my old IBM typewriter with the correction tape, I think how many words have walked across it. I think about the singular verbs with plural subjects and vice versa that the tape corrected and saved. And, it seemed that some times it would not let my fingers walk away from a dangling participle and it always stalled on split infinitives. It seemed to be the happiest when adjectives and adverbs were used to describe a jovial occasion; but, the fingers seem to be heaviest on the keys when double negatives were used. But, in the end, it just did not want to be burdened with superfluous words. After using it from time to time, I just pat my faithful IBM friend and put the cover back on and say “thanks for a job well done.” Other times, while I am using my computer and marvel at the ease of its use, I say to my old IBM friend, you sure earned your rest.
