Walking down the Malecon in Puerto Vallerta is an interesting and enjoyable site. The vendors are out in full force. The artist who is drawing a picture of a family is so exacting in his features and expression that you realize that God has given so much talent in different forms. You see the small child and mother selling bracelets made from beans and each bean is in variegated colors. Another Grandmother is selling purses made from bubble gum wrappers which is a fete in itself. A pregnant mom selling silver ear- rings. A lot of jewelry is displayed which looked like silver. The entire walk is covered with different vendors who are very polite. The sand castle builders are also busy with their creations. It is amazing the time they spend building fish, castles, houses, and even little people. Their pay is the tips that people generously give them. Also, the Mexican Indians are colorfully dressed in their regalia and are climbing their pole for their dance. And, in the background is the beautiful blue sky and ocean with the waves lapping into the sand. The wind is very strong and cooling in the shade. As we stopped for a rest, a small child walks up to us with a smile, a hand extended with a beautiful stretch bracelet made from pearls – now how could anyone resist this approach. Her first word was “five dollars.” I thought she would speak the amount in Spanish. I asked her if she could say five dollars in Spanish and she immediately – no Spanish – English. The experience that we have had at the condo is that the workers tell us to speak English not Spanish – they desperately want to learn English because that makes them eligible for a promotion in their job. We had dinner in the old town at a restaurant called “Andale’s.” Their special was roasted chicken and potatoes which was delicious. The people are very helpful and gracious which makes for a wonderful vacation. It has been our vacation spot for four years.
