Leaving the confines of the ranch for a different type of solitude is exciting, especially when we go to the coast. Our destination was Crystal Beach, Texas, to our little cabin. I have always lived close to the water so when we moved to the hill country the environment and pace were very different. The hill country climate is very dry and fresh; whereas, the Gulf Coast is humid and hot. I love the water and when I am standing on the shore I can’t help thinking how large the body of water is and also how lonely it is. I always think of it as a mirror for the sky because it can be beautiful when it is sunny. I have seen the water when it is serene and calm and it can be smiling with little waves. During the winter with the clouds present, the water can appear mean and fierce. Then the waves are huge and frightening, telling me they are angry. The week was so much fun – even with the high winds and cold weather – no phones, no computers, eating, sleeping, and visiting with friends.
