Have you ever noticed when you are watching young people how they have a hard time with coping skills? A psychiatrist was discussing this topic and explained that young people do not know how to cope with life in this day and age. His reasoning was that parents try to solve all of their children’s’ problems when they are growing up; therefore, when they enter the working and real world they do not know how to solve problems.
All of this has been brought to light with the advent of team play which in today’s world everyone gets a trophy when the game is over because you do not want to hurt anyone feelings by losing rather than have stiff competition and the winner receives the trophy.
Also, the parents not instilling discipline in children at home so when they go out the same rules apply. He said his practice had increased with parents bringing their problem children and wanting him to give them a prescription. His opinion was he does not give prescriptions, initially, until he understands what the problem is. He said too many are given drugs like Zoloft and he said it only makes things worse. He works with the children to teach them coping skills and teach them how to make decisions.
They have not been taught that skill because they have not had any experience of failing and living through it. An experience that a friend of mine had her child was hyper and the teacher wanted her to take that child to the doctor and get a prescription for Zoloft. Instead she transferred him to another class without Zoloft and he did fine because the teacher knew how to handle the child – kept him busy and not bored. So it is important that you know what is going on at the school-house if you have a child there.
