Slavery was a practice in which human beings were owned by other human beings. A slave would work for this owner without pay. But, he would receive clothing, food, and shelter. Slavery existed for thousands of years. Historians considered slavery as the first step toward civilization because in early days the conquerors would kill their prisoners. The first slaves were of many races. Slavery began in the U.S. in the 1600’s. There were not as many slaves in the north as in the south due to the amount of farming in the south. The field slaves which consisted of whites and blacks worked in gangs and they planted, weeded, and harvested the crops. In 1865, things began to change to free the slaves with the ratification of Amendment 13 and then 14 and 15 gave slaves citizenship and civil rights. We have come a long way in this part of history; but, some people still live in the past and cannot let go. None of the people living in this life had anything to do with slavery; but, you would not know that by the people who keep reliving that part of history. Yes, we don’t want to forget our past; but, we also don’t want to put blame where it is not warranted. Hopefully, we have learned from the history that was lived and move on to the future. As we all know, movies are stories which are made to tell us about the past; but, not necessarily the true past – most of them are embellished by political factions to foam resentment between cultures and races. True facts are published in the libraries of this country and should be a part of our educational system in this country and children elevate through it. But, that is another failure of our educational system in dumbing down our children which is part of the liberal political agenda.
