DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

When you meet someone for the first time do you judge them immediately or do you put your judgement on hold until you know them better?  A coach was being interviewed on television and voicing his experiences on how he made decisions on young men for his college team.  He said something that I had not heard in quite some time.  He said he viewed all of the films on the player and then had a one on one interview with him.  This one particular player was an excellent player; but, the thing that impressed the coach the most was the young man addressed the coach with “yes sir and no sir” and the coach felt like that was something that would add to his team not just the fact he was a good player.  A true story that I experienced was one of my bosses was interviewing at a particular college.  There were two men that he was specifically there to interview.  Both men’s GPA was the same and he was having a difficult time trying to decide between the two.  At dinner that evening with the two young men, he observed when the entrée arrived at the table one of the men immediately picked up the salt shaker and salted  his food without tasting it.  The other young man tasted the food first and then picked up the salt shaker.  So the tie was broken at that point;  and, the tasted food first and salt after was selected for the job.  The reason being they felt the person selected would check events before actually making a decision whereas the other jumped to the conclusion that the food was not salted.  So in life you have to check out the water before you jump in it.
