Do you ever people watch when you are in public? I am a people watcher. It is so much fun listening to the different voices and languages – especially the way people dress today. People wear what they want to wear and do not care what other people think whether it is going to a dance, movie, grocery store, church, or beach. I notice that flip-flops are the most popular shoe in America no matter where you go. They look comfortable but they always cause a blister on my toes so I stay away from them. So I always lean toward just a front strap sandal. I marvel at the young people who wear the new five-inch heels. That surely must throw your back out of kilter. In church, I see a lot of different types of dress – some look like they are in town for vacation – which our town does have a lot of tourists. We have one family that are from Africa and the lady of the house wears this beautiful skirt/blouse and head scarf with matching shoes with very vivid colors. I never see her husband with her but her children are dressed like the mother – very striking. One lady wears a dressy suit with a matching hat with a veil on special occasions like Christmas which is beautiful. Others dress more casually. Some men wear suits, some sport coats, others dress casually with shirt and dress pants. And we also see blue jeans. Sometime, we see women and men from the Middle East in town and they are noticeable because their attire reminds me of what the Blessed Virgin Mary wore. The men’s clothes remind me of what Jesus wore. But as our priest reminds people from time to time – the fact that you are present is what counts not what you wear. New Years Eve is approaching and I am looking forward to people watching again.
