It is about time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. One thing I would like for the planning educators to start thinking about is restructuring our educational process in junior school and high school to include skills courses. For example: welding, plumbing, air conditioning, instrumentation, electrical, computers, and others. The government is always talking about every one going to college – not everyone is suited for college or want to go to college. I think we need to start weeding out by testing what our children are most suited. A lot of young people want to have their own business instead of going to college. Our country is slowly losing our skills people in these areas. Whatever happened to Distributive Education (DE) where in high school the children went to school a half of a day and worked a half of a day to gain a skill? We have to get back to the basics which include reading, writing, and arithmetic; and, before a person graduates from high school he or she has to pass all of these courses. Most graduates cannot read or write! Why are we allowing this? Social promotion has got to stop!
