Spanish goats are called “the poor man’s cow. It is a relative of the sheep. It is supposed to be able to live on a diet of tin cans. They do not really eat cans – but it is true that they will lick or chew anything that may contain minerals. Goats are rugged animals and find enough food to eat even on poor dry land. Young goats are carried in the bodies of their mother for 21 to 23 weeks before they are born. The mother can bear up to three kids at a time and can reproduce twice a year. The kids can run and jump four hours after birth. They are weaned at three to six months. The male goat is called a billy, the female is called a nanny, and the baby is called a kid. The goats on our ranch are raised and sold for “fajita meat” which is very popular in the south, also in Mexico. They are very nosy animals and very playful when they are young. The nannies are very protective of their young. They love to see-saw and can climb up trees if branches are low enough.
